Sturminster Newton United progressed to the quarter-final stage of the Dorset Senior Trophy with a 4-0 crushing of local rivals Shaftesbury Reserves.
In fact the home side blitzed the away team by racing into a four goal lead in 35 minutes. Defender Rob Froud opened the scoring by volleying home inside the penalty box when a corner wasn't cleared and it wasn't long before a second was added. Skipper Mike Budd (pictured) grabbed his long awaited first goal of the season and it wasn't long before he slotted home his second. Budd's second was a well crafted goal after some excellent approach play from his colleagues.
Finally, top goalscorer Stuart Frear bravely put his head where it hurts as he nodded home the fourth from close range. Frear could have added a second, but the Shaftesbury keeper made a brilliant save when Budd had set up the striker for a close range volley.
The second half saw some changes. Warren Meadowcroft made his first team debut at the centre of the Stur defence, and Mike Revell and Matt Elson joined the fray. There was no further scoring, although Elson did hit the bar with a cross-come-shot and Revell, getting himself into dangerous positions, missed from close range.
Sturminster Newton will travel to either Hamworthy United Reserves or Weymouth Sports in the last eight of the competition. That game will be played on Tuesday night at the County Ground and Cherries manager Gary Head will be at the game to see who we get in the next round.
