Sturminster Newton United signed off 2011 with a much deserved 2-0 home victory against Stourpaine on Saturday.

After intense pressure, the resolute Stourpaine defence finally gave way, when a Steve Moore cross was turned into the net by a Stourpaine defender late in the first half. It was the least the home side deserved.

In the second period, Stourpaine got more and more into the match and they went closest when an attacker hit the angle of crossbar and post. Although Sturminster had their chances, goalkeeper Jamie Beale had to be on his guard to make a tremendous save to keep the home side in the lead.

With only moments remaining, skipper Mike Budd unselfishly played in top goalscorer Stuart Frear (pictured) who had time to pick his spot and drive home and secure all three points.

The Cherries now do not play until 7th January, when Gillingham Reserves visit Barnet's Field.

SNUFC: Beale, C Frear, Traas, Frampton, Meadowcroft (Hedges), Sweatman, Budd (c), Moore, S Frear, Stockley (Carter), Moussalli (Manning).
