Weymouth Sports 0 Sturminster Newton United 2

Sturminster Newton United cruised into the last four of the Dorset Senior Trophy with a 2-0 win at Weymouth Sports.

Both goals came in the first half and the victory sets up a home semi-final against local rivals Okeford United on 10th March.

Stur dominated the opening exchanges and opened the scoring in the 7th minute. Mike Budd's right wing cross was turned into the net by the recalled Tom Traas from close range. The away side grew in confidence and it wasn't long before Trass scored his and Sturminster's second. This time, the impressive Dan Carter was the provider, whipping a ball between the goalkeeper and back four. His cross was met at the far post by Traas who bundled the ball home despite the close attentions of a Weymouth Sports defender.

The Cherries didn't take their foot off the pedal. Before half time, a flowing move down the right hand side of the pitch ended with top goalscorer Stuart Frear smashing a volley against the bar with the goalkeeper stranded. Steve Moore's follow up didn't find the net and the danger was gone.

The second half saw a more even affair, but the North Dorset side always seemed in control. On the break they caused some problems. Left back Will Gould (pictured) drew a smart save from the keeper and Traas was denied his hat-trick by an offside flag. Substitute Mike Revell was unlucky not to make it three himself when through at the far post.  Goalkeeper Jamie Beale, who had little to do all afternoon, made a smart save down low to his right to mantain his clean sheet.

Sturminster Newton United are through to the semi-finals without conceding a goal in the competition to date.

SNUFC: Beale, Hedges, W Gould, Frampton (Revell), Froud, Sweatman, Budd (c), Moore, S Frear, Carter, Traas (Moussalli). Subs not used: Meadowcroft, C Frear, Stockley.
