SNUFC  1   -  Weymouth Cougars 5

Weymouth Cougars are a very strong team, currently top of the league, and to date have lost only one match this season. That was to us when we last met them at their home ground. We learned then that they were a force to be reckoned with, and although we pulled a result at that meet, today was unfortunately a different story.

The first 15 minutes were fairly even, with opportunities both ways. On the 15th minute though, Weymouth took the opening goal, and there followed another 15 minutes of tough play with Sturminster never really getting it together. Weymouth had the upper hand, and a second goal followed within 3 minutes. The next three goals all came before the half time whistle amongst a rather disjointed Sturminster effort that saw both Jack Bailey and keeper Barnaby Sharp injured. Both boys played on, Barnaby carrying his injured hand through to the very end.

The half time team talk had an effect, and our boys came out with a renewed vigour. The game ran end to end but the goals just didn’t happen. A somewhat scrappy game, with goal mouth scrambles at both ends not finding the net. Again it seemed that Weymouth were stronger, with some very persistent tackling giving them them the edge most of the time. Sturminster ran a few breaks and did however create some scoring opportunities. It was one of these that saw Thomas Upshall fouled and a penalty awarded. Jack Bailey took the goal from the spot in the last minute of the game.

Although not getting the result needed today, our boys certainly had a wake up call and their performance in the second half at least held the score, not conceding any more goals. This was down to their determination in fighting off what proved to be the better team today.

The boys are now looking forward to next weekends fixture and the opportunity to bring their game back up to standard.
